Terms of Use.

The conditions for reading, sharing, and reusing material from the Atlas.

Using this publication

These terms describe use of The Deep Life Atlas at bristora.cc, including its articles, images, navigation, and search. By using the site, you agree to these terms to the extent permitted by applicable law. If you do not agree, please stop using the site. Our privacy policy explains information handling separately.

The atlas is currently free to browse without an account. It does not provide a paid membership, purchase system, public comment service, or reader-upload platform. These terms address the services actually offered rather than creating obligations for features that do not exist.

Educational purpose and scientific limits

Articles explain deep-sea organisms, environments, research methods, and environmental change for general readers. They are not professional scientific opinions, navigational instructions, diving advice, collecting permits, or guidance for operating equipment or entering marine environments. Use qualified expertise and the relevant authorities for such decisions.

Scientific classifications, datasets, and interpretations can change. We aim to link the evidence supporting an explanation, but do not warrant that every statement is complete, current, or free of error. A cover photograph documents an encounter; it does not establish every behavioral or ecological claim about the animal. Read the source and its limitations before relying on a summary for specialist work.

The atlas does not claim formal peer review or institutional endorsement. For questions about a particular article, use the correction process on our contact page.

Permitted reading, sharing, and quotation

You may browse the website, link to its public pages, and print reasonable copies for personal study or classroom discussion. Short quotations from original editorial text should clearly identify The Deep Life Atlas and link to the original article. These permissions do not grant ownership of the work or override rights that applicable law independently provides, including quotation and other permitted uses.

For republication of a complete article, extensive reuse, translations for distribution, or use beyond these permissions, contact [email protected] with the material, intended audience, format, and purpose. Do not republish our articles as your own work or imply that we endorse a separate product, organization, or publication.

Photographs and third-party material

Original editorial writing, third-party research, photographs, icons, fonts, and software can have different rights. A citation is not a license to reproduce an entire paper, dataset, or image. Follow the license and attribution requirements attached to each item.

Many photographs used by the atlas come from NOAA Ocean Exploration. NOAA's reuse guidance explains that material is generally public domain unless otherwise identified, while some contributed works remain copyrighted. Check the original source page, retain the required credit and relevant metadata, and obtain any necessary permission from the actual rights holder. The atlas cannot grant rights it does not own.

Local WebP copies may be cropped or resized for presentation. Our image captions retain the expedition and source trail; those edits do not make third-party photographs exclusively ours. Open-source interface components remain subject to their own licenses, including notices distributed with the site.

Responsible access

Use the site lawfully and respect other readers' access. Do not attempt unauthorized access, evade security controls, distribute malicious code, impersonate the publication, or deliberately overload the hosting infrastructure. Automated access must respect applicable law, published permissions, and reasonable service limits. Public availability is not permission for bulk republication of copyrighted content.

Messages, corrections, and submissions

If you send a source, correction, or other material, provide only information you are entitled to share. Sending an email does not transfer ownership of your work or grant a blanket license for public republication. We may use the information to investigate and answer the request. If public use requires additional permission, it should be agreed separately.

A correction or coverage suggestion does not guarantee publication. We may revise, expand, or remove an article as evidence develops. Material factual corrections should explain the change on the affected page; minor presentation changes may be made without a separate note.

External links and availability

Links to NOAA, research institutions, publishers, and other services are provided for context and verification. Those services control their own content, terms, availability, and privacy practices. A link does not imply endorsement by either party. We cannot guarantee that an external page will remain accessible or unchanged.

The website may be interrupted, altered, or unavailable because of maintenance, hosting conditions, or other causes. We do not promise uninterrupted access or a particular performance level.

Liability and applicable rights

To the extent permitted by applicable law, the website is supplied as available, without a guarantee of suitability for a particular purpose. We are not responsible for losses arising from reliance on general educational material or from third-party services beyond our control, except where responsibility cannot lawfully be excluded.

Nothing in these terms excludes a non-waivable consumer right or liability that applicable law does not permit to be limited. No fixed governing jurisdiction or mandatory arbitration arrangement is asserted here. Questions or disputes should first be raised through our contact address; any further remedies remain subject to applicable law.

Changes and contact

We may update these terms as the publication and its services develop. Revised terms will be posted with an updated date, with any additional notice required by applicable law. If one provision is unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue to apply to the extent legally possible.

For permissions, rights concerns, or questions about these terms, email [email protected]. Please include the relevant page and a clear explanation so the issue can be assessed.
